Which French marshal was made King of Sweden in 1818?

The story behind the answer

The French marshal made King of Sweden in 1818 was Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte.

Bernadotte served as one of Napoleon’s marshals, although he sometimes disagreed with the emperor and maintained an independent political outlook. In 1810, Sweden’s childless King Charles XIII adopted him as crown prince after the Swedish parliament selected him as heir to the throne. He took the name Charles John, or Karl Johan in Swedish.

As crown prince, Bernadotte eventually turned against Napoleon and joined the coalition opposing France. His Swedish forces participated in the campaigns of 1813, including the Battle of Leipzig, where Sweden helped defeat Napoleon. He became King Charles XIV John of Sweden in 1818, succeeding Charles XIII, and also ruled Norway as Charles III John under the union between the two countries.

Bernadotte is a notable exception to the usual pattern of Napoleon’s marshals: rather than ending his career in exile or disgrace, he founded Sweden’s modern Bernadotte dynasty, which still occupies the Swedish throne.
