The French king supported the Treaty of Alliance signed with the United States in 1778, after the American victory at Saratoga encouraged France to intervene openly. France supplied troops, weapons, money, naval forces, and diplomatic recognition.
French military assistance was crucial in the later stages of the war. French forces fought alongside the Continental Army, and the French fleet helped prevent British relief during the Siege of Yorktown in 1781.
Louis XVI was executed during the French Revolution in 1793. He is sometimes confused with Louis XIV, the earlier “Sun King,” or Louis XV, who ruled before him.
