Which French island was Napoleon Bonaparte born on?

The story behind the answer

Which French island was Napoleon Bonaparte born on? Napoleon was born on Corsica.

He was born Napoleone Buonaparte in Ajaccio, Corsica, on 15 August 1769. His parents were Carlo Maria Buonaparte and Maria Letizia Ramolino, members of a minor Corsican noble family. The family home in Ajaccio is now preserved as Maison Bonaparte.

Corsica had only recently changed political hands. The Republic of Genoa transferred its rights over the island to France in 1768, and French control was being consolidated around the time of Napoleon’s birth. That setting helped shape his early identity: he grew up speaking Corsican and Italian-influenced forms before becoming fully immersed in French military and political life.

The answer is sometimes confused with Elba, another Mediterranean island strongly associated with Napoleon. Elba was not his birthplace; it was where he was exiled after his first abdication in 1814. Majorca and Sicily likewise had no role as Napoleon’s birthplace.
