Which French general won the Battle of Rocroi in 1643?
Answer
Louis II de Bourbon
Answer
Louis II de Bourbon
Which French general won the Battle of Rocroi in 1643? Louis II de Bourbon, the Duke of Enghien, won the French victory at Rocroi.
The battle was fought on 19 May 1643, only days after the death of King Louis XIII and the accession of the four-year-old Louis XIV. Louis II de Bourbon was just 21 years old, but he commanded the French army alongside experienced officers including Jean de Gassion.
French forces defeated the Spanish army led by Francisco de Melo. The victory relieved the siege of Rocroi and dealt a major symbolic blow to Spain’s famed Army of Flanders, particularly its tercios, which had dominated European battlefields for generations.
Louis II later became known as the Great Condé, one of France’s most celebrated commanders. Henri de Turenne was also a prominent French general, but he did not command the French army at Rocroi; Cardinal Richelieu had died before the battle, and Louis XIII was the king rather than the field commander.
