Which French general commanded the French army alongside Washington at the 1781 Siege of Yorktown?
Answer
Comte de Rochambeau
Answer
Comte de Rochambeau
Comte de Rochambeau commanded the French army alongside Washington at the 1781 Siege of Yorktown.
Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, led French land forces sent to support the American Revolution. His army joined George Washington’s Continental Army in the campaign against British forces commanded by Charles Cornwallis.
The siege depended on cooperation between land and sea forces. French naval commander Comte de Grasse blocked British reinforcement by sea after the Battle of the Chesapeake, while Washington and Rochambeau directed the allied army on land.
Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. The victory was the last major land engagement of the war and helped lead to the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
