Which French emperor was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo?

The story behind the answer

The French emperor defeated at the Battle of Waterloo was Napoleon Bonaparte. As Napoleon I, he commanded the French Imperial Army during the battle on 18 June 1815.

Waterloo was Napoleon’s final major military defeat. He had escaped from exile on Elba in February 1815, returned to France, and regained power during the period known as the Hundred Days. European powers responded by forming the Seventh Coalition, whose armies moved against him in Belgium.

Napoleon tried to strike the allied forces before they could fully coordinate. He fought the Prussians at Ligny on 16 June, then faced Wellington’s Anglo-allied army at Waterloo two days later. Prussian reinforcements arrived during the battle, helping the coalition force the French army into retreat.

Napoleon abdicated for the second time after Waterloo. He was later exiled to the remote Atlantic island of Saint Helena, where he died in 1821. Napoleon III was his nephew and a later French emperor, but he was not the ruler defeated at Waterloo.
