Which French company produced the Citroën DS?

The story behind the answer

Which French company produced the Citroën DS? Citroën produced it.

The DS was a groundbreaking executive car manufactured from 1955 to 1975. It debuted at the 1955 Paris Motor Show and became famous for its streamlined body, exceptional ride comfort and advanced engineering. Citroën built more than 1.4 million DS cars during its production run.

Its most celebrated feature was hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension, which used pressurised fluid and gas to smooth the ride and maintain the car’s height. The DS also helped popularise disc brakes on a mass-produced car. Designer Flaminio Bertoni created its distinctive shape, while engineer André Lefèbvre led much of the technical development.

The name is a French-language pun: “DS” sounds like “déesse,” meaning “goddess.” It is sometimes confused with the later DS Automobiles marque, which became a separate premium brand decades after the original Citroën DS ended production.
