Which French admiral commanded the fleet defeated at Trafalgar?
Answer
Pierre-Charles Villeneuve
Answer
Pierre-Charles Villeneuve
The French admiral who commanded the fleet defeated at Trafalgar was Pierre-Charles Villeneuve. He led the combined Franco-Spanish fleet against Britain’s Royal Navy at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.
Villeneuve’s fleet sailed from Cádiz after Napoleon ordered it to challenge British naval power. Napoleon hoped that French and Spanish ships could gain control of the English Channel and support an invasion of Britain. Instead, the combined fleet was intercepted off Cape Trafalgar by Admiral Horatio Nelson’s British force.
The allied fleet had more ships of the line than the British, but its crews were less experienced and its formation was poorly coordinated. Nelson’s attack in two columns broke through the Franco-Spanish line, producing a decisive British victory. Nelson was killed during the battle, but Britain lost no ships and established lasting naval supremacy.
Villeneuve survived, was captured, and was later released. Napoleon had already decided to replace him, blaming his caution and earlier failures. Villeneuve returned to France and died in Rennes in 1806. Spanish Admiral Federico Gravina commanded the Spanish contingent, but Villeneuve was commander of the combined fleet.
