Which franchise won its first World Series title in 1997 as a wild card team?
Answer
Florida Marlins
Answer
Florida Marlins
The Florida Marlins won their first World Series title in 1997 as a wild-card team.
In only their fifth season, the Marlins finished 92–70 and won the National League wild card. They defeated the San Francisco Giants in the Division Series and the Atlanta Braves in the NL Championship Series before facing the Cleveland Indians in the Fall Classic.
Florida won the best-of-seven World Series four games to three. Game 7 went into extra innings, where Édgar Rentería's single drove home the winning run. Marlins pitcher Liván Hernández, who had also starred in the playoffs, was named World Series MVP.
The championship was historic because Florida became the first wild-card team to win the World Series. The franchise was also unusually young for a champion: its fifth-season title remained the fastest expansion-team championship until the Arizona Diamondbacks won in their fourth season in 2001. The team later became the Miami Marlins, but the 1997 champions played under the Florida Marlins name.
