Which foundry in London originally cast the Liberty Bell?
Answer
Whitechapel Bell Foundry
Answer
Whitechapel Bell Foundry
The Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London originally cast the Liberty Bell.
The bell was commissioned in 1752 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly. At that time, the firm was called Lester and Pack; it later became known as the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. The bell arrived in Philadelphia in August 1752.
The first casting cracked when the bell was tested. Local founders John Pass and John Stow recast it twice, and their names appear on the bell. The familiar inscription begins, “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof,” quoting Leviticus 25:10.
The Liberty Bell was originally the State House Bell, used to summon lawmakers and announce public meetings. Its modern name developed in the nineteenth century, especially through abolitionist use. The bell is now displayed in the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia.
