Which foundation supported Bohr's 1911 trip to England?
Answer
Carlsberg Foundation
Answer
Carlsberg Foundation
The Carlsberg Foundation supported Niels Bohr’s 1911 trip to England. After earning his doctorate at the University of Copenhagen, Bohr received a Carlsberg Foundation fellowship for a year of study abroad.
In September 1911, he travelled first to Cambridge, where he encountered J. J. Thomson and the Cavendish Laboratory. Bohr’s stay there was not especially successful, but it introduced him to the leading British work on atomic structure. He later moved to Manchester, where Ernest Rutherford’s nuclear model strongly influenced his thinking.
That English research journey helped set the stage for Bohr’s 1913 atomic model. Bohr adapted Rutherford’s nuclear atom to Planck’s quantum ideas, proposing that electrons could occupy discrete stationary states and emit or absorb energy when moving between them.
A common mix-up is the Rockefeller Foundation, which supported important later scientific work and institutions, including research connected with the Bohr Institute. The 1911 travel fellowship, however, came from the Danish Carlsberg Foundation.
