The Foundation’s Advisory Committee advises on the selection, but the formal appointment belongs to the Booker Prize Foundation. The panel normally has five members, including a chair, and its composition changes annually.

Judges come from varied backgrounds: novelists, poets, critics, editors, journalists, academics, actors and other public figures with strong literary interests. They read eligible long-form fiction published in the United Kingdom or Ireland, then choose the longlist, shortlist and winner.
