JPMorgan Chase was created in 2000 by merging Chase Manhattan and J.P. Morgan.
The merger combined Chase Manhattan’s commercial banking business with J.P. Morgan’s investment banking and corporate finance operations. The resulting company became one of the largest financial institutions in the United States.
JPMorgan Chase’s name reflects the histories of both predecessor organizations. It is distinct from JPMorgan, the investment banking brand, and Chase, the consumer and commercial banking brand, although both operate within the same corporation.
The company’s lineage includes many earlier banks and financial institutions, including Chemical Bank, Manufacturers Hanover, and Bank One. Those acquisitions and mergers helped create the broad banking network associated with JPMorgan Chase today.
