Apple released the first iPhone in 2007, introducing a touchscreen smartphone that combined telephony, internet access, and an iPod-style media player.
Apple announced the device on January 9, 2007, at the Macworld conference in San Francisco. It went on sale in the United States on June 29, 2007, through a partnership with AT&T. The original model had a 3.5-inch display and used a version of Apple’s iPhone OS, later renamed iOS.
The iPhone was not the world’s first smartphone, but its multitouch interface and software-centered design helped reshape the mobile-phone market. A common mix-up is attributing the invention of the smartphone itself to Apple; earlier devices such as IBM’s Simon and various BlackBerry models already combined mobile communication with computing features.
Apple has since released many iPhone generations, but the 2007 model is commonly called the original iPhone or iPhone 2G.
