Microsoft owns GitHub, which it acquired in 2018 for $7.5 billion in stock.
GitHub is a web-based platform for hosting and collaborating on software projects. It uses Git, a distributed version-control system originally created by Linus Torvalds for Linux kernel development.
Microsoft announced the acquisition in June 2018 and completed it later that year. GitHub continued to operate as a separate platform, and Microsoft said it would preserve GitHub’s developer-focused identity and openness to projects using different programming languages and tools.
GitHub is not the same thing as Git. Git is the version-control software; GitHub is an online service built around Git repositories, collaboration, issue tracking, and related development tools. Microsoft also owns other developer products, including Visual Studio and the Visual Studio Code editor.
