Which Fortune 500 company introduced Ivory soap, marketed as floating soap, in 1879?

The story behind the answer

Procter & Gamble introduced Ivory soap, marketed as floating soap, in 1879.

Ivory was one of Procter & Gamble’s earliest major branded consumer products. The company promoted it as a pure soap that floated in water, a feature that made it distinctive and helped consumers recognize it in the marketplace. The brand became closely associated with the slogan “99 44/100% Pure.”

A company employee, Harley Procter, is credited with creating the Ivory name after a biblical reference to ivory. The precise origin of the soap’s floating property has been debated in popular retellings, but the product’s buoyancy was central to its advertising and identity.

Ivory is not the same brand as Palmolive or Dove. Procter & Gamble grew from a Cincinnati soap-and-candle partnership founded in 1837 and later built a broad portfolio of household, beauty, and personal-care brands.
