Which fort did Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold capture in May 1775?

The story behind the answer

Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold captured Fort Ticonderoga in May 1775.

The fort stood at the southern end of Lake Champlain in present-day New York. On May 10, 1775, Allen and the Green Mountain Boys entered before dawn, while Benedict Arnold arrived separately with a small force from Massachusetts.

The surprise attack captured the fort’s small British garrison with little fighting. The American forces also seized artillery, including heavy cannons that Henry Knox later transported to Boston during the winter of 1775–1776.

Fort Ticonderoga’s location made it strategically valuable because it controlled an important route between Canada and the Hudson River valley. The capture was one of the first offensive actions by American forces after the fighting at Lexington and Concord.
