Which former U.S. Federal Reserve chair shared the 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences?

The story behind the answer

Ben Bernanke shared the 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig.

The award recognized research on banks and financial crises. Bernanke’s historical analysis of the Great Depression showed how bank failures could worsen and prolong an economic downturn by disrupting credit and weakening the broader economy.

Bernanke served as chair of the United States Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2014. He led the central bank during the global financial crisis that began in 2007–08, although the Nobel citation honored his research rather than his later policy position.

Diamond and Dybvig were recognized for theoretical work explaining why banks can be economically valuable but vulnerable to runs. Bernanke’s empirical and historical work complemented that theory by showing how banking collapse affected the Depression. The three laureates therefore approached financial crises from related but distinct angles.
