Fangorn Forest is the setting of the ancient tree Ents in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
In Tolkien’s fictional world of Middle-earth, Fangorn lies at the southern end of the Misty Mountains, near Isengard and Rohan. The forest is named for Fangorn, also called Treebeard, the oldest of the Ents encountered by the story’s characters. Ents are sentient tree-like beings who serve as shepherds of forests.
Fangorn plays a major role in The Two Towers, the second volume of Tolkien’s novel and the second film in Peter Jackson’s adaptation trilogy. Its Ents eventually attack Isengard after learning about Saruman’s destruction of trees. Fangorn is sometimes confused with Mirkwood, another important Tolkien forest farther east. Mirkwood is associated with the woodland realm of Thranduil, while Fangorn is specifically the home of Treebeard and the Ents in the narrative.
