Which forest is famous for the giant redwoods along California’s northern coast?

The story behind the answer

Redwood National and State Parks protect the giant coast redwoods of northern California.

The park system includes Redwood National Park and three California state parks: Jedediah Smith Redwoods, Del Norte Coast Redwoods, and Prairie Creek Redwoods. Together they preserve some of the largest remaining stands of coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens.

Coast redwoods are the tallest trees known to science. Their height is supported by the region’s mild temperatures, winter rainfall, and frequent summer fog, which reduces water loss and can add moisture to the forest ecosystem.

Coast redwoods differ from giant sequoias. Coast redwoods are generally taller and grow near the Pacific coast, while giant sequoias have greater trunk volume and occur naturally in the Sierra Nevada. The park’s protected landscape also includes prairies, streams, and beaches.
