Which forest in Poland and Belarus is famous for ancient European bison and primeval woodland?

The story behind the answer

Białowieża Forest is the famous primeval woodland in Poland and Belarus associated with ancient trees and European bison.

The forest is one of Europe's largest remaining areas of old-growth lowland forest. It crosses the modern national border, and its protected areas preserve a complex ecosystem of oak, ash, spruce, and other trees, along with dead wood and natural clearings.

European bison, also called wisent, are its best-known large mammal. The species was reintroduced to the forest in the twentieth century after becoming extinct in the wild, and Białowieża became a major refuge for the recovering population.

Białowieża Forest is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its name is sometimes confused with Białowieża National Park, which protects only part of the larger forest ecosystem.
