Which forest covers much of the island of Borneo and is home to orangutans?

The story behind the answer

The Borneo rainforest covers much of Borneo and provides important habitat for orangutans.

Borneo’s tropical forests occur across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. They include lowland dipterocarp forests, peat-swamp forests, montane forests, and mangroves. Their extraordinary plant diversity includes many towering dipterocarp trees, which can form a high canopy.

The island is home to the Bornean orangutan, a great ape found nowhere else in the wild. Other characteristic wildlife includes proboscis monkeys, clouded leopards, pygmy elephants, and hornbills.

Logging, agricultural expansion, fires, mining, and roads have reduced and fragmented many forest areas. Conservation efforts include protected areas, habitat restoration, and wildlife corridors. Borneo’s forests are shared by three countries, so their protection requires cross-border cooperation.
