Which Ford model was the first hybrid from the company?
Answer
Ford Escape Hybrid
Answer
Ford Escape Hybrid
The Ford Escape Hybrid was Ford’s first hybrid vehicle. It was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year, making the compact SUV an important early step in Ford’s gasoline-electric vehicle program.
The Escape Hybrid used a full-hybrid system that could combine a gasoline engine with electric motors, shut the engine off at stops, recover energy during braking, and move under electric power in suitable conditions. Its powertrain was developed during an era when hybrid technology was expanding beyond the Toyota Prius into larger vehicles and SUVs.
The Escape Hybrid was also notable as the first hybrid SUV sold in the United States. A related Mercury Mariner Hybrid followed, while the Mazda Tribute—despite sharing the Escape’s basic platform—did not initially receive the same hybrid option.
The other choices came later or were different types of electrified vehicles. The Focus Electric was battery-electric, while the C-Max Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid joined Ford’s lineup after the Escape Hybrid. Ford’s first hybrid should therefore not be confused with its first electric car or later hybrid models.
