Which foot is forward for a goofy-footed surfer?

The story behind the answer

A goofy-footed surfer rides with the right foot forward.

Surfing stance describes which foot leads toward the nose of the board. In a goofy stance, the right foot is forward and the left foot is nearer the tail. The opposite arrangement, with the left foot forward, is called a regular stance.

The terms do not indicate skill level, surfing direction, or whether a surfer mainly rides left-breaking or right-breaking waves. A goofy-footed surfer can ride waves in either direction and can perform the same maneuvers as a regular-footed surfer.

Stance terminology is also used in skateboarding and snowboarding. Many beginners identify their natural stance by sliding on a smooth floor or noticing which foot they instinctively place forward, though surfing experience can affect comfort and balance.
