Which folk tale tells of a boy born from a peach who fights ogres?

The story behind the answer

The Japanese folk tale about a boy born from a peach who fights ogres is Momotarō.

In the familiar version, an elderly, childless couple find a giant peach floating down a river. When they try to open it, a boy emerges and tells them he was sent to become their son. They name him Momotarō, combining momo (“peach”) with Tarō, a common male given name.

As he grows older, Momotarō travels to Onigashima, or “Demon Island,” to confront oni, supernatural ogres who have terrorized the land. Along the way, he recruits a dog, monkey, and pheasant by sharing kibi dango, traditionally millet dumplings. The companions help him defeat the oni and recover their stolen treasure.

A common mix-up is assuming every old version has the same origin story. In many Edo-period variants, the elderly woman and her husband eat a peach and regain their youth before naturally conceiving Momotarō. The peach-birth version became the standard through modern retellings and school textbooks, especially during the Meiji period.
