Which flowering plant is commonly known as the flame lily?

The story behind the answer

Gloriosa superba is the flowering plant commonly known as the flame lily.

Gloriosa superba is a climbing herbaceous plant in the family Colchicaceae. Its flowers have strongly reflexed petals, usually red or orange with yellow coloring, giving them a flame-like appearance. The plant climbs using tendril-like tips at the ends of its leaves.

It is native to tropical and southern Africa and parts of tropical Asia, but it has been introduced elsewhere as an ornamental plant. The species grows from underground tubers and can reach several metres when supported by surrounding vegetation.

All parts of Gloriosa superba contain colchicine and related compounds, making the plant highly poisonous if eaten. Its attractive flowers have therefore led to accidental poisoning in some regions. The flame lily should not be confused with true lilies, which belong to the genus Lilium.
