Georgia O'Keeffe painted poppies in her 1928 work Oriental Poppies.
The painting shows two enormous red-orange Oriental poppy blooms against a dark background. O'Keeffe’s close-up treatment makes the flowers appear almost abstract, emphasizing color, curves, and the dark centers rather than botanical scale.
She became widely known for paintings of flowers, but she rejected the idea that her work should be reduced to simple floral decoration. By enlarging small natural forms, she encouraged viewers to look closely at structures that might otherwise be overlooked.
Oriental Poppies belongs to the period when O'Keeffe was producing some of her best-known flower paintings in New York. It is often confused with her works titled Red Canna, which depict cannas rather than poppies.
