Which Florida Marlin scored the winning run in game 7 of the 1997 World Series?
Answer
Craig Counsell
Answer
Craig Counsell
Craig Counsell scored the winning run for the Florida Marlins in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series.
The decisive game against the Cleveland Indians was tied 2–2 after nine innings, sending the series finale into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Counsell reached base when a ground ball by Edgar Renteria was mishandled by Cleveland’s second baseman, Carlos Baerga.
Renteria then lined a two-out single into center field. Counsell raced home, beating the throw and giving Florida its first World Series championship with a 3–2 victory. The title came only in the Marlins’ fifth season as a franchise.
A common mix-up is to name Renteria, whose hit drove in the run, rather than Counsell, who scored it. Counsell also contributed earlier with a sacrifice fly that tied the game in the ninth inning.
