Which Flemish painter completed the 'Ghent Altarpiece'?
Answer
Jan van Eyck
Answer
Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck completed the Ghent Altarpiece, also known as The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. The enormous polyptych was officially installed in Saint Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent in 1432 and is one of the defining masterpieces of Early Netherlandish painting.
The work was begun by Jan’s older brother, Hubert van Eyck, probably in the 1420s. After Hubert’s death, Jan completed the altarpiece, which explains why both brothers are associated with it. Art historians generally agree that Hubert designed or initiated the project and Jan executed most of the surviving painted panels, although separating their individual contributions remains difficult.
The altarpiece is famous for its intricate symbolism, precise observation, and sophisticated use of oil paint. Its central image shows the Lamb of God surrounded by angels and worshippers. A frequent misconception is that Jan created the entire work alone; the historically careful answer recognizes Hubert’s role while identifying Jan as the painter who completed it.
