Which flatfish has the scientific name Hippoglossus stenolepis?
Answer
Pacific halibut
Answer
Pacific halibut
The flatfish with the scientific name Hippoglossus stenolepis is the Pacific halibut.
Pacific halibut are large righteye flounders native to the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. Like other flatfish, they begin life with one eye on each side of the head. During larval development, one eye migrates to the other side, allowing the adult fish to lie on the seafloor with both eyes facing upward.
The species has a broad, diamond-shaped body, a dark upper surface, and a pale underside. This countershading helps it blend with the ocean floor when viewed from above and with the brighter water when viewed from below. Its crescent-shaped tail and strongly arched lateral line help distinguish it from several other flatfish.
Pacific halibut are commercially, recreationally, and culturally important across Alaska and western Canada. They migrate between feeding grounds and deeper winter spawning areas along the continental shelf. The Atlantic halibut is a close relative and can grow larger, but it belongs to a different species, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, and lives in the North Atlantic.
