Which fish is the largest living bony fish?
Answer
Ocean sunfish
Answer
Ocean sunfish
The ocean sunfish is the largest living bony fish.
Unlike sharks and rays, the ocean sunfish has a skeleton made primarily of bone. It belongs to the family Molidae and is recognized by its enormous, laterally flattened body and unusual truncated rear fin. Adults can reach more than 3 metres in length and weigh over 2,000 kilograms.
Ocean sunfish often bask near the surface, which probably explains their common name. They also visit cleaning stations where small fish and seabirds remove parasites. Their diet includes jellyfish, although they also eat crustaceans, fish and other soft-bodied prey.
The whale shark is larger, but it is a cartilaginous fish rather than a bony fish. The giant oceanic manta ray is also enormous, yet it does not exceed the ocean sunfish in maximum body mass.
