Which fish is famously associated with sea anemones? Clownfish are the fish best known for living among sea anemone tentacles.
Clownfish, also called anemonefish, are marine damselfishes in the genus Amphiprion. They live in warm tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and western Pacific, especially around coral reefs. Their relationship with anemones is mutualistic: the stinging tentacles shelter clownfish from predators, while the fish defend the anemone, remove parasites, fan water across it, and provide nutrient-rich waste.
A common mix-up is assuming every clownfish uses every anemone. In fact, different species specialize in particular hosts. Clark's anemonefish is unusually flexible and can use all ten recognized host-anemone species, while some clownfish species use only one. Clownfish gradually acclimate to an anemone's stings by touching and rubbing against its tentacles.
The fish are also notable for their social hierarchy. A group normally contains one breeding female and one breeding male; if the female disappears, the male changes sex and takes her place. The famous orange-and-white ocellaris clownfish helped make this symbiosis widely recognizable through Finding Nemo.
