Which fish can glide above the water for long distances?

The story behind the answer

The fish that can glide above the water for long distances is the flying fish. It launches itself from the sea at high speed, spreads its enlarged fins, and uses them like wings to remain airborne.

Flying fish are a family of marine ray-finned fish called Exocoetidae, with about 64 species in seven genera. Their long pectoral fins act as aerofoils, while their strong, stiff bodies and powerful tail strokes help them leap clear of the water. They are found mainly in tropical and warm subtropical oceans.

This is gliding rather than true powered flight: flying fish do not flap their fins like birds. They usually escape underwater predators such as tuna, swordfish, mackerel, and marlin. Some can use wave-generated updrafts to extend their glide, and they may touch the water with their tails to accelerate into another leap. Barbados even recognizes the flying fish as one of its national symbols.
