Helsinki traditionally declares a New Year message at Senate Square.
Senate Square is the ceremonial heart of Helsinki, Finland. It is dominated by Helsinki Cathedral and surrounded by important neoclassical buildings, including the Government Palace and the University of Helsinki’s main building. Its architecture makes the square a natural setting for major civic gatherings and broadcasts.
The city’s New Year celebration has traditionally included a public program at Senate Square, with speeches, music, performances, and a midnight countdown. The event is often presented as a national or citywide celebration because Finnish television and other media carry the proceedings to viewers beyond the square.
Helsinki is Finland’s capital, but Turku sometimes causes confusion because it was Finland’s former capital and remains an important historic city. Senate Square itself is also not Helsinki’s central railway station or Market Square. Those are separate landmarks with their own public events and locations.
