Which Final Fantasy Tactics kingdom is fought over in the War of the Lions?

The story behind the answer

The Final Fantasy Tactics kingdom fought over in the War of the Lions is Ivalice.

Final Fantasy Tactics is set in the fictional kingdom of Ivalice, where a succession crisis erupts after the king dies and leaves an infant heir. Two noble factions support rival claimants: Duke Larg’s White Lion faction and Duke Goltana’s Black Lion faction. Their struggle becomes the Lion War, the political conflict at the center of the game.

The story follows Ramza Beoulve, a highborn knight who becomes entangled in the conflict while uncovering a much larger conspiracy involving the Glabados Church and the Zodiac Stones. His childhood friend Delita Hyral rises through the political turmoil by navigating both noble power and popular unrest. The war is therefore not a conflict over Valisthea, Vana’diel, or Eorzea; those names belong to other Final Fantasy settings.

Ivalice was created by designer and writer Yasumi Matsuno for Final Fantasy Tactics, released in Japan in 1997. It later became a shared setting for titles such as Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Final Fantasy Tactics A2. The War of the Lions is the 2007 enhanced version of Final Fantasy Tactics, not a separate kingdom or unrelated war.
