Which Final Fantasy game introduced the Limit Break mechanic?

The story behind the answer

Final Fantasy VII introduced the Limit Break mechanic under that name. In battle, a character’s Limit gauge fills as they take damage; once full, the character can unleash a powerful, character-specific attack or ability.

The system gave each party member a distinct combat identity. Cloud uses sword techniques, Aerith can heal or support the party, Tifa performs a timed sequence of attacks, and Cait Sith relies on a slot-machine-style ability. Limit Breaks therefore functioned as both dramatic finishing moves and expressions of personality.

Final Fantasy VII did not invent the broader idea of a desperate special attack. Final Fantasy VI had Desperation Attacks, which could randomly trigger when a character was in critical health. However, VII turned that predecessor into a visible, controllable gauge-based system and established the phrase “Limit Break” in the series.

Later games adapted the idea under different names: Final Fantasy VIII retained Limit Breaks, Final Fantasy IX used Trance, and Final Fantasy X used Overdrives. The terminology and activation rules changed, but the basic tradition began with VII.
