The film Quinceañera won the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
Directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, the film follows Magdalena, a teenager in Los Angeles whose planned quinceañera becomes complicated by family conflict and an unexpected pregnancy. Emily Rios plays Magdalena.
The award helped bring attention to the film’s portrayal of Mexican American family life, sexuality, religion, and community expectations. It was later distributed theatrically in the United States under the title Quinceañera.
The film is sometimes confused with similarly titled coming-of-age stories, but its Sundance recognition specifically refers to the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize. It also received the festival’s Audience Award in the same dramatic category.
