Pandora’s Box won the Golden Shell at the 2008 San Sebastián International Film Festival.
The film is a 2008 Turkish drama directed by Yeşim Ustaoğlu. Its Turkish title is Pandora’nın Kutusu, meaning “Pandora’s Box.” The story follows three adult siblings who search for their missing elderly mother in the Black Sea region and confront tensions within their family.
The title uses the familiar Pandora image as a metaphor for hidden family problems coming to the surface. Unlike the 1929 film of the same English title, this work is not centered on Lulu and does not adapt Frank Wedekind’s plays.
The Golden Shell is the top competition prize at the San Sebastián festival, one of the major film festivals in Spain. Ustaoğlu’s win brought international attention to the film and marked it as a significant achievement in contemporary Turkish cinema.
