FIFA 22 introduced HyperMotion animation technology.
HyperMotion combined advanced match-capture data with machine learning to create more responsive and realistic football animations. EA Sports used Xsens suits to record a full 11-versus-11 competitive match, then used the resulting data to generate movement for the game.
The technology was available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Stadia, and later-generation versions, rather than on every platform equally. FIFA 22’s promotional material linked HyperMotion to more than 4,000 new animations and improved player interactions.
HyperMotion was not the name of the game engine: FIFA 22 still used Frostbite. It was also separate from FIFA 12’s Impact Engine, which focused on collision physics. Later releases expanded the technology under the HyperMotion2 name.
