FIFA 17 introduced the Frostbite engine to the main FIFA series.
Before FIFA 17, many FIFA games used EA Sports’ Ignite engine. FIFA 17 moved the series to Frostbite, a technology also used in other Electronic Arts titles. The change supported visual improvements, more detailed stadiums, lighting, animation, and expanded presentation features.
The engine transition was especially visible in The Journey, FIFA 17’s cinematic story mode about Alex Hunter. Frostbite helped the developers create more elaborate scenes outside ordinary matches and gave the mode a presentation closer to a narrative sports drama.
The move did not mean every version of FIFA 17 used identical technology. Some older platforms received different technical features, but FIFA 17 is recognized as the series entry that introduced Frostbite to the principal game.
