Which FIFA game first featured the UEFA Champions League as a licensed competition?

The story behind the answer

FIFA 19 was the first FIFA game to feature the UEFA Champions League as a licensed competition.

Electronic Arts added the Champions League, Europa League, and UEFA Super Cup to FIFA 19 after its licensing agreement with UEFA. The competitions appeared across several modes, including Career Mode, Kick-Off, and the story campaign involving Alex Hunter.

The addition was significant because UEFA club competitions had previously been strongly associated with Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series. FIFA 19 therefore expanded its official competition coverage beyond domestic leagues and international tournaments.

The UEFA Champions League license remained part of later EA football games, including FIFA 20, FIFA 21, FIFA 22, and FIFA 23. The licensing of a competition is separate from licensing every individual club, player, or stadium, so coverage can vary by league and country.
