Which FIFA confederation does Argentina represent?

Argentina represents CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, in FIFA competitions. CONMEBOL is the regional governing body for football in South America.

Founded in 1916, CONMEBOL is FIFA’s oldest continental confederation. Its members include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Bolivia and Venezuela. The confederation organizes major competitions such as the Copa América and manages South American qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.

Argentina’s membership explains why its World Cup qualifying matches are played against South American opponents. It also connects the national team to the region’s historic football rivalries, especially its long-running contests with Brazil and Uruguay. CONMEBOL should not be confused with UEFA, which governs European football, or CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.
