Humans seek to mine unobtanium on Pandora in James Cameron’s Avatar.
In the 2009 film, unobtanium is an extremely valuable mineral found on Pandora. Its fictional properties make it important to Earth’s energy and economic systems, motivating the Resources Development Administration’s mining operation.
The mining conflict brings human corporations and military forces into direct opposition with the Na’vi, whose society and sacred places are threatened by extraction. The mineral therefore supplies the film’s immediate economic motive, while the wider story examines colonialism, environmental destruction, and cultural conflict.
“Unobtanium” is also a real informal engineering term for a hypothetical or ideal material with exceptionally desirable properties. Avatar adapts that playful technical word into a specific fictional resource. It is not the same as dilithium from Star Trek or spice from Dune.
