Which fictional street is Harry Potter’s family home in J.K. Rowling’s novels?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter’s family home in J.K. Rowling’s novels is at Privet Drive.

Harry lives at number four, Privet Drive, in the fictional town of Little Whinging, Surrey, with his aunt Petunia, uncle Vernon, and cousin Dudley Dursley. The ordinary suburban street contrasts with the magical world that Harry discovers after receiving his Hogwarts letter.

The Dursleys’ house is protected by a blood-related magical safeguard connected to Harry’s mother, Lily Potter. As long as Harry can call Privet Drive home, the protection remains important to his safety. This explains why Albus Dumbledore insists that Harry return there during his school holidays.

Privet Drive is one of the series’ best-known non-magical locations. In the film adaptations, the exterior of number four was represented by a real house in Picket Post Close, Martins Heron, in Bracknell. The house became a recognizable filming landmark, although the fictional street itself is not a real Surrey location.
