Which fictional region is the setting of the original Pokémon games?

The story behind the answer

Kanto is the fictional region setting of the original Pokémon games.

Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow take place across Kanto, where players travel between towns, routes, caves, forests, and the Pokémon League. The player’s journey involves defeating eight Gym Leaders, challenging the Elite Four, and pursuing the goal of becoming Champion.

Kanto’s design established the regional structure used throughout the series. Important locations include Pallet Town, Viridian City, Celadon City, Lavender Town, and Cinnabar Island. Professor Oak’s laboratory in Pallet Town is where the player begins the adventure and receives a first partner in the story.

The name Kanto was not used in the original Japanese Red and Green games, even though the region was later identified as Kanto. It became especially clear in Pokémon Gold and Silver, which allowed players to revisit the original region after completing the Johto storyline.
