J.R.R. Tolkien’s character Treebeard belongs to the Ents.
Treebeard is an Ent, an ancient tree-like race that appears in The Lord of the Rings. His Elvish name is Fangorn, and he is the guardian of Fangorn Forest. Ents are described as shepherds of trees, responsible for protecting forests and responding to the destruction caused by enemies such as Saruman.
Treebeard meets Merry and Pippin after the hobbits escape from the Orcs. Their conversation helps awaken his awareness of Saruman’s industrial damage, and he eventually leads the Ents in an assault on Isengard. The Ents’ slow deliberation contrasts with the urgency of the war, but their strength becomes decisive.
Treebeard is sometimes classified simply as a talking tree, but Tolkien’s Ents are a distinct sentient people with their own language, history, and traditions. They should also be distinguished from Huorns, related tree-like beings whose nature is less clearly defined in the narrative.
