Father Brown investigates murders in the Father Brown episode “The Hammer of God.”
The title refers to a short story by G. K. Chesterton, first published in 1910. Father Brown is a Roman Catholic priest whose knowledge of human weakness and moral motives helps him understand crimes that appear mysterious to others.
In “The Hammer of God,” the investigation concerns the death of a notorious man found beneath a church tower. The story’s solution depends less on laboratory evidence than on character, temptation and the distinction between public virtue and private guilt.
Father Brown differs from many fictional detectives because he is not a police official or professional investigator. Chesterton used him to explore ethics and confession as well as mystery plotting. The character later appeared in radio, film and television adaptations, including the BBC television series that began in 2013.
