Which fictional character inspired Dr. Gregory House in House M.D.?

The story behind the answer

Sherlock Holmes inspired Dr. Gregory House in House M.D.

The connection appears in several parts of the series. House solves medical mysteries through observation, deduction, and the elimination of unlikely explanations, much as Holmes solves criminal cases. Even the surname “House” echoes “Holmes.”

House and Holmes also share traits such as exceptional intelligence, social detachment, drug use, and a close friend who serves as a sounding board. James Wilson occupies a role comparable to Dr. John Watson, although Wilson is an oncologist rather than a biographer or detective.

The inspiration does not mean House is a direct adaptation of a particular Holmes story. Instead, the series reworks Holmesian ideas in a hospital setting, replacing crimes and suspects with symptoms, tests, and competing diagnoses.
