The Ferrari model that supplied the V6 engine used in the Lancia Stratos was the Dino.
The Stratos used Ferrari’s 2.4-liter Dino V6, mounted behind the passenger compartment in a mid-engine layout. The engine was related to Ferrari’s Dino sports-car powerplant and was selected because it combined compact dimensions with strong performance and racing potential.
The road-going Stratos HF Stradale used a lower-tuned version producing about 190 horsepower, while competition versions produced roughly 275 horsepower in their original 12-valve form. The engine’s placement helped give the Stratos excellent traction and balance on rally stages.
“Dino” can cause confusion because it identifies both a Ferrari-associated marque and an engine family, rather than a single conventional Ferrari model name. The name honored Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari’s son, who helped inspire the V6’s development. The Stratos won the World Rally Championship in 1974, 1975 and 1976.
