Which fantasy author created the world of Discworld?

The story behind the answer

Terry Pratchett created the world of Discworld. The setting is a flat, disc-shaped world carried through space on the backs of four elephants standing on the giant turtle Great A'Tuin.

Pratchett introduced Discworld in The Colour of Magic, published in 1983. The series eventually grew to 41 novels, combining comic fantasy with satire about politics, religion, bureaucracy, newspapers, policing, economics, and social prejudice. Much of the humor comes from applying modern ideas to traditional fantasy situations.

Discworld was influenced by myths and religions involving worlds supported by turtles or other enormous creatures. Pratchett had already explored a disc-shaped planet in his earlier science-fiction novel Strata, but Discworld developed into a far richer setting, with major locations such as Ankh-Morpork, Lancre, and the Unseen University.

A common mix-up is confusing Pratchett with Douglas Adams, whose work also uses British comic absurdity. Neil Gaiman collaborated with Pratchett on Good Omens, but he did not create Discworld.
